Forward Coach

Canterbury’s tradition of outstanding forward coaches should be maintained by Dr. J. D. Stewart who has replaced Mr R. H. Duff, a South Island selector this season.

A Manawatu, Canterbury and New Zealand Universities representative prop and hooker. Dr. Stewart was one of the

most durable and determined players in Canterbury in the 1950’5.

He played most of his Rugby for Canterbury University and captained the team when it won the senior championship in 1950, the club’s first win since 1940. Dr. Stewart then became eoach of the team and produced some of the finest club packs seen in the senior competition. His association with country Rugby in recent years became evident when Country began to match the Town teams in all phases of play.

Dr. Stewart follows such outstanding forward coaches as Messrs N. J. McPhail, P. K. Rhlnd and R. H. Duff who year after year produced packs which were among the best in the country. With his great knowledge of forward play, bis ability and enthusiasm, Dr, Stewart will be a worthy successor.
