Tavern Licence Sought
An application for a tavern licence for Warner’s Hotel has been made to the Licensing Control Commission by the owner of the property, Square Freeholds, Ltd.
A spokesman for Square Freeholds, Ltd., said yesterday that the application would be beard when the commission returned to Christchurch. He understood that this would be in June.
The spokesman said that the tavern, if the licence was granted, would be on the ground floor of the building. Tenders for the building
of 29 shops on the ground floor of the building w»e considered by the architects yesterday. It has been planned to build 15 shops in the first stage but if the tavern licence were granted, only 10 to 12 shops would be built
The spokesman said that the tavern would be entirely separate from the shops and also from the first floor upwards which had been leased and was to be used for a private hotel. The public bar on the south side of the building would become a -bottle store if the tavern licence were granted, and a new entrance, giving access to the tavern, would I
bo made next to the bottle store entrance. There would also be access to the tavern from Press lame.
The tavern premises would contain a large room using half the present lounge and dining room which would provide sit-down drinking facilities for hundreds of customers. The cocktail bar would remain in the tavern premises.
Asked if the private hotel would apply for a restaurant licence on the first or second floors, tiie spokesman said he did not know. He emphasised that the tavern, shops and private hotel would be sepand wmfld have different entrances.
