Bed On A Pedestal

Bedrooms are getting barer. The day of fussy chintz drapes has gone at least for a while—and the latest trend is to have virtually nothing in the room but the bed.

In many cases the dressing table has moved into the bathroom, the chests of drawers and wardrobes have taken refuge behind built-in fitments, and the bed stand in solitary splendour.

This means it his to be a good one. Bed design has remained basically unchanged for the last twenty years—but now designers are beginning to turn their attention to it

An innovation from a Scandinavia is the bed on a centre pedestal. There is no head, but a shelf-unit near at hand accommodates a bedside lamp.

Divans, with unfussy coverings, are best-sellers. They are harder and wider than the beds of a decade ago. They turn readily into sofas in rooms which have to serve a dual purpose, and underneath they are enclosed to keep out the dust

Pedestal-making is best left to the expert The overhang from the base to the side of the bed means that extra supports have to be built on to the frame and this can be tricky.

A bedroom stripped of gimmickry can be highly effective—so long as the furniture it does contain is of good quality. Modern pieces look best—Victorian can look awful.

A bed with a pedestal base can look stunning in a sparsely furnished room. It solves the problem of cleaning under the bed, too.
