Recently Formed Bishops 9 Synod To Meet In Rome

(N Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) VATICAN CITY, April 13. The Pope, has chosen five main subjects, including matters of Church doctrine and mixed marriages, for discussion by the recently-created bishops’ synod later this year, a Roman Catholic newspaper said yesterday. "Matters concerning the doctrine of the faith” would be the most important topic to be put before the international gathering of bishops, to be held in Rome between September 29 and October 24, said the Bologna newspaper: “L’Avenire d’ltalia.”

The synod, called by Pope Paul, will give the Roman

Catholic Church its first “Parliament” since the end of the Ecumenical Council.

The newspaper said doctrinal matters are those that most “preoccupy,” the Pope. In an address to Italian Bishops last week, he warned that “irreverent and Utopian” thinking was spreading "like an epidemic” through the Church and threatening the faith.

He did not specify, but seemed to be referring to progressive theologians who ; openly question the validity of such doctrines as the virgin I birth of Christ and His physical resurrection.
