Big Basketball Win To Checkers

Checkers scored a big win over Rangiora when the women’s indoor basketball second round games were played at the Cowles Stadium last evening.

Other top ranked teams, Brighton and Rex, had a close struggle, Brighton won narrowly. University had a comfortable win over Rebels.

Results of games:— Checkers SI. Rangiora 14. Brighton U, Rex 10. University 31, Rebels 10. Wlgram a bye. Checkers v. Rangiora From the outset, Checkers looked the superior side and beat the defence with ease and skill. With S. Chamberlain and J. Baker in fine shooting form and well supported by. N. Sutton, M. Neiman and J. Partridge, Checkers gave few chances. The scoring rate slowed only when the top line-up left the field. In the latter stages play deteriorated badly. Top scorers: J. Baker (Checkers) 16, S. Chamberlain (C.) 18.

Rebels v. University University took an instant lead when P. Sullivan scored a lay-up from the tip-off. Rebels had ample possession and in the early stages appeared capable of holding the opponents, but shots at goal felt well wide of the mark. For University, sterling work by D. Broughton and P. Sullivan kept their side well ahead. At times Rebels defence appeared slightly apologetic and allowed University to capatilitae on all movements. , Play In the second half followed the same trend and some

alert guarding by Broughton and G. McGregor stopped many Rebel movements. Apart from some spectacular interceptions by S. Langrope, Rebels did not impress and lost opportunities with frequent mishandliing. Top scorers: D. Broughton (University) 12, S. Langrope (Rebels) 8.

Brighton v. Rex In a long, uninspiring, lowscoring game notable only for the strength of the defensive play, Brighton managed to scrape home to a one-point victory. Neither team appeared able to counter the others’ defence and both were too slow to switch play from defence to attack.

The half-time score of 6-4 in Brighton’s favour was indiicative of the accuracy of the shots at goal. In the second half only three shots by J. Mcßeth put Brighton ahead. Rex retaliated with goals by R. Leask and H. Fellowes, but was finally edged out by one point. Top scorer: J. Mcßeth (Brighton) 6.
