PORT AIR POLLUTED

Smoke From Ships Dense smoke from ships working in the harbour had polluted the air in parts of Lyttelton for some time, the borough smoke inspector (Mr J. L. O’Callaghan) reported to the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening. No official smoke readings had been made as he felt a solution might be found if the council offered the Lyttelton Harbour Board advice on the problem, the inspector said. The Health Act; 1956, did stipulate that where a nuisance in a district was caused by persons outside the district, proceedings could still be taken against them as if the nuisance had been caused in the district. He recommended the council consult with the harbour board, and also advise the board that, if they wished, tests and advice could be arranged. The report was adopted.
