Church Comer Traffic Problem

Delays by the Ministry of Works in carrying out its scheme for channelling Church corner traffic were referred to at a meeting of the Paparua County Council last night.

The National Roads Board has for some time been considering parking restrictions, a new centre line and lane markings at the comer, which is the junction of Riccarton road, the Main South road and Yaldhurst road. The Sockbum county town committee reported to the council that the traffic inspector (Mr J. E.L. Hume) had said that the present centreline marking was incorrect, as it could bring about the

situation where traffic turning into and out of Yaldhurst road could assume the right-of-way over straight-through Main South road traffic. The committee was told that the ministry, M.E.D. and the Waimairi County Council were considering improved lighting for the junction, and that this could be installed before winter. The council decided to arrange a meeting with Waimairi to discuss traffic at the corner, and to see if improvements could be expedited.

Mr Hume proposed a traffic island for the Racecourse road-Buchanans road intersection, and a “stop” sigh on Buchanans road. The county engineer (Mr A. Dyhrberg) was asked to report. A Transport Department letter urged the widening of Hie Waterloo road seal between Racecourse road and Carmen road in support of a request from the Riccarton

High School Board for the provision of a cycling lane, and a 30 m.p.h. restriction. The council decided to give the question further consideration. Favourable comment was made on the traffic lanes put in at the Brynley and Tower street junctions with the Main South road at Hornby, and it was decided to ask for a pedestrian crossing on the side streets.

On the I.G.A. supermarket development at Hornby, the council was told that a Roads Board subsidy could be paid on the site access roads. It was agreed to discuss with the Ministry of Works the widening of the Main South road through Hornby. Hostel.—Support in principle was given for a Hornby Rotary Club scheme to provide a young peoples’ hostel at Hornby. Beautification.—An offer by the Waimairi County Council

to report on the beautification of the joint vehicle testing station at Sockburn was accepted.

War Memorial.—lt was decided to get the views of the R.S.A. on a proposal to move the Templeton war memorial from the entrance to the domain to the R.S.A. property.

Boundaries.—Arising from the recent meeting of city local bodies to discuss boundary adjustments, .the council agreed to meet the Halswell County Council if Halswell was in favour.

Finances.—The Clerk (Mr A. Kelly) said that the general financial position was good, and that total turn-over for the year amounted to £600,000. Building.—The finance committee reported a record total of £2,144,936 worth of building permits issued for the year ended March 31.
