Investigation Of Sale Of Islands

(Neut Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 9.

The Minister of Lands (Mr Maclntyre) is to investigate the selling of small private islands off the coast of the North Island to Americans.

A spokesman for the Minister’s office confirmed this yesterday and added that the investigation would concentrate on finding out how many off-shore islands had been sold. The Minister would then decide whether any action was necessary and what form it should take. The spokesman said the Government was concerned about the selling of islands to Americans, particularly those islands in the Hauraki Gulf.

The Government had shown its concern by purchasing land there itself for use as a national park. The spokesman said there was no restriction on buying land in New Zealand and the purchaser did not have to be a New Zealand citizen.

He pointed out that islands sold to Americans were private islands and that the public had no more access to them when they passed into American hands.
