High Voltage In Ellerslie Win

"Ths Praia" Special Service

AUCKLAND.

Just when the most dangerous of his opponents started to weaken High Voltage battled clear of the pack for a half-length win in the Hosking Memorial at Ellerslie yesterday.

Two starts back High Voltage ran a good race for fifth in the H. O. Nolan Handicap. His failure, meanwhile, got him so much out of favour that he was the eighth favourite of 10 this time. A five-year-old gelding, by Globe of Light from Precocious, High Voltage had not been successful in open company. Yesterday High Voltage trailed the pacemaker, What You Will, then Craddock for the first seven furlongs. As others improved on the outside he was squeezed back from the thre efurlongs until the run home. Its rider, B. F. Andrews, then sent him forward again and had him in front with 100 yards to go. Ocean Mist ran on gamely to shade Golden Guy and Capella for second. Hi Value, after a gap, headed the others.

After eeveral fairly good efforts without winning, Viola gained a well-deserved win in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Maungatapere Handicap. Viola was sixth or seventh for most part of the running. In the last furlong she put in a determined finish for her victory by a length from Felix Dee. Bostock, the pacemaker, held third narrowly from Markable.

Viola Is trained by F. T. and M. E. Ritchie at Bllefslie. F. T. Ritchie, the junior member of the partnership, saddled her up. Hfs father is at Awapunl with Terrific. The weather was fine and the track fast.

On-course bets were £192,384 ss, including £21,911 5s on doubles, compared with £49,593 15s last year at Whangarei. The T.A;B. double dividend was £l9B 9s for £l. Results:—
