Chatham Cup Under Guard
Every precaution is being taken to ensure that the Chatham Cup, the supreme soccer trophy in New Zealand, does not suffer the same fate as the World Cup, the supreme soccer trophy in the world, while it is in Christchurch briefly tomorrow.
The World Cup was stolen off its stand while on show at an international stamp exhibition in London last year. The Chatham Cup will be on show at Rangers Park, McGregors road, while its holders, Miramar Rangers, of Wellington, play the four-club combined Cijristchurch United team.
Although its market value may not be great, the Chatham Cup, presented to the New Zealand Football Association by the crew of H.M.S. Chatham, has historic significance in New Zealand sport. Soccer trophies have been sporting prizes for thieves. In addition to the theft of the World Cup last year, subsequently found in a suburban garden by a dog, Pickles, the original English Football Association Cup was stolen from a North of England shop window and never recovered. The present trophy is a replica of the original cup. The Christchurch United Club committee will post a guard beside the Chatham Cup throughout the period it is on show to. the soccer public tomorrow.
