“COURAGEOUS JAPANESE”

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND.

The outstanding courage of almost every player they faced was the main feature noted by two Auckland players—N. Culiimore and D. H. Montgomery—on the recent tour of ' Japan by a New Zealand Universities Rugby team.

Culiimore, an Auckland representative loose forward last season, said the Japanese were "fantastic tacklers.” “They just dive in at anything, no matter bow big the man happens to be.” However, their lack of size had proved a handicap, said Culiimore. In the second half the stamina of the Japanese sides had tended to run out. “We were often being held quite well until half-time but we would get on top as the other team tired.” Montgomery, a wing-three-quarter who has played for Otago and Auckland, said he

had not noticed the difference in size so much but felt the main weakness in the Japanese play was positional. The backs tended to stand a little shallow and this limited their chances of attacking.
