THIEF PACKS SUITCASES

A thief who broke into Hay’s, Ltd.’s department store in Ashburton in the early hours of yesterday morning and selected £l5O worth of clothes which he packed into two suitcases taken from stock, was apparently disturbed and left the shop without taking the goods. Ashburton police believe that entry was gained to the building about 2.30 a.m. through an area at the back of the premises which is being extended and rebuilt Two other premises were broken into during the night. They were the workshop of Burnetts Motors, Ltd., at the intersection of South and East streets, and the nearby office of the company’s used car division. Tools were taken from the workshop, and car ignition keys were taken from the office and a car on display converted. The car, which had not been recovered by last evening, is a 1960 Morris 1000 painted light green and bearing the registration number AJ5921.
