WAR IN BRIEF
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) HONG KONG, March 27. The Peking “People’s Daily” said today the United States was preparing to run the risk of spreading the Vietnam war to China. Radio Peking quoted an article in the newspaper as saying: “It is most obvious that the U.S.A. will not take its failure on the battlefield of South Vietnam . . . they are preparing to run the risk of launching a new war and spreading the war to the whole of Indo-China, Asia and even China.” SAIGON, March 27. Viet Cong guerillas ambushed and virtually wiped out a 16-man combined American and South Vietnamese patrol yesterday, a United States military spokesman said today. Some 100 Viet Cong attacked the patrol with machineguns and automatic weapons from concealed positions. Only two of the patrol survived, and they were seriously wounded.
WASHINGTON, March 26.
Senator Edward Kennedy said tonight the United States should stop its bombing of North Vietnam on a trial basis, to test Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin’s indication that a halt in the air attacks could bring negotiations. Agreeing with Senator Kennedy on a television-radio programme was a Penpsylvania Democrat, Senator Joseph Clark. But a Republican also appearing on the programme, Senator Hugh Scott, said a bombing pause would allow North Vietnam to build up its men and supplies an enable Hanoi to “clobber the dickens out of us.” WASHINGTON, March 27. MiG fighters over North Vietnam have become more aggressive and American pilots wanted permission to attack MiG airfields around Hanoi, Senator Stuart Symington said in a report released yesterday, the “New York Times” News Service reported.
