Next World Match
In spite of political difficulties, preparations for next year’s world ploughing contest in Rhodesia are well in hand, according to Mr E. R. Linnell, chairman of the Ploughing Association of Rhodesia. “We are looking forward with considerable pleasure to entertaining friends from throughout the world and showing them something of Rhodesia,” he says in a letter that has been received in Christchurch. “We have an excellent level land site—loamy sand and ploughable to a depth of 16 inches. It is about 25 miles from our capital, Salisbury, where we expect to accommodate the ploughing teams. “After the contest we hope to show our visitors, not only
aspects of our agricultural development, but also such places as the Victoria Falls, Kariba dam and hydro-electric station, and the wild life game reserves where practically every species of African wild life can be seen either by day or moonlight night, and entertainment such as African tribal dances.” Mr Linnell, who will be coming to New Zealand in May for this year’s world contest near Christchurch, said he would be bringing with him a film of the ploughing site, the surrounding farm and other places of interest. Rhodesia’s representative in the world final in Canterbury will be S. A. Moorcroft, a young farmer with a wife and two children who previously represented Rhodesia in the world contest in Austria in 1964. Mr Linnell says that both he and Mr Moorcroft are looking forward to their visit to New Zealand.
