Floating Tank

“A new and inexpensive kind of storage tank for water or other liquids, such as vegetable oils or petrol, has been developed by the National Research Development Corporation,” said Denis Desoutter in the 8.8.C.’s World Service programme “Science and Industry.” “The idea is to store the liquid in a large synthetic rubber bag, and to support the bag by floating it in a slightly larger pond of water. The pond is simply dug out of the ground, preferably where there is already a natural hollow, and lined with plastic sheet. Only a few j inches of water all round are enough to support the inner bag and to keep it free from ! damage by rubbing against the soil. [ “This kind of reservoir avoids loss by evaporation, and It’s very cheap—about £lO for each 10,000 gallons. It needs no concrete, and the materials are light and easy to transport anywhere. Maintenance costs are low. and a firm called Gordon Lowe at Cowes in the Isle of Wight is manufacturing it.”
