Successful Day
'THE Initiative of the East A Christchurch - Shirley Cricket Club in organising a single-wicket tournament at Burwood Park last Sunday was rewarded handsomely. The day was very warm—the rain which brought an abrupt halt to the test next day starting half an hour after the final—and some of the cricket of a very high quality. Also, Burwood Park is one of the most pleasant grounds in Christchurch and there was a very good pitch. The New Zealand coach, M. J. Horton, who was eliminated in the first round, later remarked that the pitch was as good as any be
has seen in this country. The public was kept well entertained. There was very vigorous batting early in the piece from B. F. Hastings, J. W. Grocott (in the same match), and S. C. Guillen, while two golfers of varying quality, E. H. M. Richards and M. L. Ryan, played one of the brightest and closest matches. Later there were some very tense matches and good pace bowling by R. S. Cunis, K. I. Ferries and R. C. Merrin. Throughout, it was a pleasure-filled afternoon and should have done much to promote interest in the club, and cricket.
