Coincidence Of Scott Cheque

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 22. A cheque dated November 10,1824, and signed by W. A. Scott, believed to be Sir Walter Scott, the Scottish poet and novelist, was presented in Auckland today to Sir Walter Scott, chairman of the s Australian Decimal Currency Board. The donors, an Auckland couple who wished to remain

anonymous, said they were given the cheque in London about 40 years ago. The cheque reads: “Abbotsford, November 10, 1824. Pay to bearer thirty pounds sterling, which placed to my account with Leith Banking Company, to George Craig, Esquire, then agent at Gelashiels. W. A. Scott.” Today Sir Walter Scott commented: “This is remarkable, and the cheque does seem genuine. Another coincidence

is that it is dated on my birthday. “I have never really found out if I am related to the Scottish writer, but 1 must now check this.” Sir Walter Scott has been to the Scott home in Abbotsford and also has the journals of Sir Walter Scott.

Shortly after the 1824 cheque date, Sir Walter Scott ran into heavy financial difficulties.
