Training Course For Hostesses
Why are some parties such dismal failures? Two Christchurch women spent a wet Sunday afternoon recently pondering the question and decided the answer was fundamentally a lack of planning ahead. Successful entertaining, they agreed, depended on many details often overlooked or learnt by trial and error. As far as they knew, noone had held training courses for hostesses in Christchurch, so they began planning one. It will begin on April 17 at the Exhibition Centre. Both women, Miss Prudence Rothenberg, a professional member of the National Society of Interior Designers of America, and Mrs Nola Kelliher, a model and fashion adviser, have gone into the matter of easy, gracious entertaining from every aspect. They will range from picnics and barbecues to formal dinners with place cards.
The course of lectures will be geared to young married women with small children, wives who are nervous about
entertaining their husbands' business associates, and single flat-dwellers. LECTURE TOPICS Etiquette and how to lead a conversation among strangers, how to make the best use of space in a small livingroom when giving a buffet dinner, personal grooming and what to wear for all occasions are topics which will be discussed. Flower arrangement, the right wines and cheeses to serve will also have their place in the course. Every lecture will be given by an expert The course of eight lectures will be held in two classes, one on Monday and one on Thursday evenings. At the end, one class will probably entertain the other at a wine and cheese party to practice what they have learned about entertaining with confidence, imagination and thoughtfulness for guests.
