Price Of Barley

Sir,—Last week you published the new price for malting barley for next season: an increase of 7 per cent or 7]d a bushel to 9s 6d a bushel, the first price rise for 14 years. I feel that this new adjustment is infinitesimal indeed, when the cost of production in 1953 is compared with the 1967 costs. Do we, as long-suffering farmers, passively accept this as usual, or can we rally together for an improvement on this miserable increase? I understand that one of New Zealand’s largest brewery companies, which must consume thousands of tons of this malting barley, enjoyed record profits last year.—Yours, etc., IRATE EX-GROWER. March 20, 1967.
