CORONER’S COURT Boy On Tricycle Hit By Car

A email boy riding a tricycle on the road was fatally injured when he swerved across in front of a car as he turned into the driveway of his home, according to evidence given in the Coroner’s Court yesterday. The Coroner (Mr A T. Bell) found that Michael Francis Penrose, aged five, died in the Christchurch Hospital on December 17, the cause of death being head injuries, suffered when the tricycle he was riding was struck by a car driven by Bru-c James Cochrane on Farradays road, Leeston. Cochrane, a transport company employee, said on December 17 he was driving south on Farradays road about 45 to 50 miles an hour. A car approaching from the opposite direction pulled well oyer to avoid a boy who was

riding a tricycle. Witness steered his vehicle over into the shingle verge. After the other car passed he saw the boy directly in front of his vehicle which struck the tricycle. The boy was thrown up on the bonnet and was seriously injured. DROWNED Dennis Wayne Thompson, aged 16, was found to have drowned at Pines Beaeh on January 21. Evidence was given that Thompson had gone swimming outside the patrolled area with his 15-year-oid brother, Ronald. They got carried out to sea by a rip. Ronald got to his brother but could not hold hlin. Ronald managed to get to the shore. Peter Raymond Blackmore, aged 21, a milihand, who is a member of the Pegasus Life Saving Club, reached th? youth, who put up a struggle. They were parted when they got caught by a breaker. Constable I. E. Harris, of Kaiapoi, said the dead youth was strongly built and was more than 6ft in height. He would have been difficult for even the most experienced life saver to rescue. Arthur Clement Orchard, aged 7S, was found to have died in Burwood Hospital on February 11, the cause of death being heart failure due to a heart disease aggravated by recent superficial burns suffered when he accidentally turned on the hot water tap when' having a bath at Averill House. DROWNED IN BATH Myrtle Clarke, aged 46, was found to have died at Nazareth House on February 10, the cause of death being drowning in a bath, probably following an epileptic seizure. POISONED Mary Lillian May, aged 57, was found to have died at her home at 122 Yaidhurst road on December 13, the cause of death being barbiturate poisoning.
