Hurdles Record Set

A record breaking run by R. Moore (St. Andrew’s College) in the junior 120 yard hurdles was the highlight of an end-of-the season picnic meeting at the final inter-club athletics meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday.

Moore ran the distance in 16 sec to equal the standard set to qualify as a record. It is almost certain that the performance will gain recognition as a record as it was achieved into a slight head win.

The record time was some compensation to Moore missing out on a record during the Canterbury championships. On that occasion, Moore was timed at 15.4 sec but unfortunately the time could not be approved as a record because there was no flash from the gun for the time-keepers. Although the 120 yards hurdles has been a regular event since the introduction of junior athletics the previous record was no longer applicable because of the alteration in the height of the hurdles two seasons ago from 3ft to 3ft 3in. For this reason the Canterbury centre of the Amateur Athletic Association set a standard time of 16 sec. Fields were sparse. Many Christchurch athletes were competing at Blenheim or Westport.
