Delays Affect Lamb Prices
Delays In the unloading of New Zealand lamb in Britain have been responsible for declines in the price of the product, according to the latest newsletter of the British New Zealand Meat Company. Values of New Zealand lamb had declined throughout the whole month (February), caused to a very large extent by shipping difficulties. In many instances vessels had taken many weeks to finally discharge their cargo. This had caused considerable embarrassment, the newsletter said, especially when part of a shipment had been sold to clients who were unable to obtain delivery.
“There have been cases this month where the price of lambs has, in fact, fallen by 2d per lb whilst we have been endeavouring to obtain delivery,” the newsletter said. “There is no doubt, however, that the discharge of shipping could be improved considerably, and we hope that the new automatic equipment which will be installed in London and Liverpool before too long will help greatly in a much speedier turnround of all shipping.”
