RANDOM REMINDER
MAN AND DOG
On two or three occasions during the last few years, the activities of a large black Labrador called Penny have been recorded in these columns, mainly because Penny is a dog with personality, and an excellent sense of news values. She has done it again, this time, an absolute triumph of canine freedom of expression. Her master has married, and the wedding service was in a superb setting, the lovely garden of the bride’s mother. The flowers were out in vivid colours, and strong in scent, the lawns were emerald green and
expertly manicured. The wedding service went its customary way, with all the principals, including Penny, meeting their obligations faithfully. Until the part of the service in which anyone knowing just cause or impediment, etc., was reached. Penny, a paragon of virtue throughout the proceedings, chose that moment to throw herself on her back, kick about furiously, and, with a curious mixture of barking and whimpering, record her displeasure at having to share her boss with another. The best man, who had spent weeks panicking
about the prospects of forgetting the ring, found an unexpected task thrust on him, and he succeeded sufficiently for the service to be completed. But Penny is wise in the ways of the world. Once the service was over, it must have been clear to her that there was nothing much more she could do. When the bridal couple were ready to leave for their honeymoon, Penny was first into the car. But with the philosphlcal streak for which black Labradors are noted, she deary accepted her new status. She climbed into the back seat.
