Market Unsettled In Light Trading

The share market was unsettled on New Zealand stock exchanges yesterday, and in the New Zealand list falls outnumbered rises by two to one in light trading.

Although trading in Christchurch was average, turnovers in other centres declined and the range of issues narrowed. Only 14 issues changed in price. Eight New Zealand shares fell and only four rose, and two Australian stocks advanced. There was no change in 57 stocks, of which six were overseas shares.

The highlight of the market was a 9d rise, to 55s 9d, in B.H.P. The highest price recorded for B.H.P. was 565, late in January. Wright, Stephenson recovered Id to 13s 4d, and W. Sutherland was 6d dearer at 21s 9d.

Autocrat, at 9s 6d, N.Z. Newspapers, at 28s 3d, and Woolworths N.Z. at 10s 9d, each lost 3d, and N.Z. Insurance eased Id to 22s lid.
