A former president of the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Mr R. A. Callaghan, did his schooling in a variety of buildings when he went to Methven school. Since 1959 Mr Callaghan, who is a cousin of the present president of the association, Mr S. Callaghan, has been treasurer of the association. Mr Callaghan started school at Methven in 1915. The next year the old school, which was opened in 1882, was burnt down. Then while still in the primers Mr Callaghan went to school in the Presbyterian Sunday School.
When he reached the standards he did his schooling in the Anglican Sunday School. Finally when the new school was built in 1917 and opened in 1918 he went to school there also. Mr Callaghan also has another first He was on the initial run when the privately operated Barkers road school bus service was instituted in 1916. The charge was 6d per day per pupil. The bus was a Model T Ford with wooden top and canvas sides. It would have carried about eight adults but 16 children were got inside. The veteran bus had one advantage. Mr
Callaghan says that on cold days it was possible to get out and run behind it to keep warm. This old veteran machine served as a school bus about the district for many years.
