Excessive Speeds ‘Not Condoned’

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 14. The Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) tonight issued a categorical denial that excessive speeds by Railways bus and service coach drivers were condoned by the Railwavs Department.

He was commenting in a statement on a report of evidence given before the Railways Tribunal yesterday in which a driver was reported to have claimed that the department did not discourage the breaking of speed limits. “I cannot agree that drivers are expected, even implicitly,

to exceed speed limits in order to meet time schedules,” said Mr Gordon. “Quite Explicit” “The department’s instructions to drivers are quite explicit,” he said. “They state that exceeding speed limits for the purpose of making up lost time or for any other purposes is prohibited.” The Minister said when time-tables were being planned due regard was paid to speed limits, road conditions and restrictions, and to any other factors that could have I a bearing on the timing of ! services.
