TASMANIAN TIMBER

N.Z. Exports Likely (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright; SYDNEY, March 13. Higher exports of timber to New Zealand could provide the Tasmanian timber industry with a key stabilising influence, the “Financial Review” reported today. Exports to New Zealand are already rising after the relaxation of trans-Tasman trading terms, and will continue to grow as barriers are progressively lowered. Exports Minimal Before last year's trade agreements Australian timber exports to New Zealand were minimal and of little importance to the local timber industry. Although New Zealand has insufficient local supplies of hardwoods, trade barriers have made it impossible for Australian timbers to compete with those from the west coast of North America.
