Rain Affects Cheviot Show

Rain and cool winds which set in about noon reduced attendance at the Cheviot Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show on Saturday.

Last year’s gate takings of £77 6s were reduced to £56 17s 3d.

The early weather was overcast and muggy, but there was a good crowd to watch the first events. However, persons who would normally have gone to the show in the early afternoon were discouraged by the rain.

Driving rain and cold winds persisted throughout the afternoon, and the organisers hurried the programme to complete all events. Riders and horses in the show-jumping competitions faced most unpleasant conditions. The ground became he-.vy, but the deep turf prevented it becoming too slippery. Entries were down by 65 to 3030, mainly because the flower section was down by 101 entries. However, . the sheep and horse entries were also down, the latter mainly because a gymkhana was held in the district the same day. Music was provided by the North Canterbury Highland Pipe Band, of Rangiora. There was the usual display of vehicles and machinery, and a special display on hydatids was arranged by the Cheviot County Council. Sheep Judging

The Dorset Downs judge (Mr H. Dalzell) said it was the first time the breed had been shown at Cheviot. The quality was excellent, but breeders should endeavour to keep their sheep with tighter and finer wool. The entry was good.

The Romney ram judges (Messrs J. U. McCracken and J. Austin) said the champion ram entered by Connemara Stud was a well grown and well-balanced animal. The entry was disappointing, but competition in some sections was good. The three top ram lambs were even in the wool and well grown. The halfbred judge (Mr K. D. Stevenson) said there was a good lot of sheep from the only exhibitor. Over-all the Corriedale rams were of a very high standard, said the judge (Mr H. J. Brown). Because of the wet summe- the back wool was a little affected. The lambs also were very well-grown and of a very high standard. The entry was good.

Riding Classes Miss M. Carmichael, judge of the unity competition and riding classes, said the standard of the winner was very high, but many riders depended too much on the use of reins alone to control their ponies. The outstanding pony was Debonaire, ridden by two of the Mahony children. He went 1 equally well for both girls, < Miss Carmichael said. i Results were:— ! Flock Shoop ! (Judges: Corriedsde, Hr G.
