Red Count Picked At Taranaki Today

"The Press” Special Service NEW PLYMOUTH.

Red Count and Whakamoa could trouble the Caltex Cup winner, Beira, in the Taranaki Cup at New Plymouth today. The 11-furlong event is the first leg of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double.

Red Count won a Waikato sprint at his last start and was fourth at a middle distance in the Rotorua Cup before that. Whakamoa, which has an excellent record in this company, was a close fifth in the Caltex Cup and could be improved. An easing of the track should not trouble these two. Whispering Hope is also a light-weight Improver. Beira’s tiny frame could, be troubled by her 8-7 but she cannot be denied a chance in the 12-horse field.

The best of the remainder may be Pundell, a promising hack graduate, Wednesday's placegetter, Inner Circle, and Cherie Brizard, which has been running on strongly In recent sprint races. Kurrewa has a chance to improve on his first-day third in the seven-furlong Taranaki Sprint, the second leg. Classical Glow was unable to make any Impression on the big field last week but the smaller number today should be helpful. Pay Bank should run well if allowed to make his own rules. If rain affects the track Astral Blue, Big Beau, and Bijali would also have to be considered.
