CHEAP WHEAT STORAGE

This temporary type of silo is holding about 900 bushels of wheat on the property of Mr P. W. Winter at Dromore in Mid-Canter-bury. The wheat is awaiting delivery in June. The silo would probably hold about 1200 bushels if filled to capacity. Mr Winter describes it as a cheap type of bulk storage.

The silo consists of a reinforcing mesh frame with a light hessian liner inside polythene. The wheat sits on two polythene sheets laid on the ground. A tarpaulin on a wooden frame has been placed over the top of the silo.

The polythene sheet would cost about £B, the hessian liner about £6 and the material for the frame about £B, said Mr Winter. He welded together himself the three 14ft 4in by Bft sections of reinforcing mesh for the frame.

Mr Winter says that the frame and hessian liner at least should be able to be used again. Mr Winter had an unfortunate experience last year with this type of storage when he used an aluminium type of material as the only lining for the silo. Sheep apparently have a liking for this material and broke into the silo. They gorged themselves on the wheat that spilled out and more than 200 died. But he says that there is nothing wrong with the idea of this type of storage.
