2500gns Top At Sale

Cheeky, a three-year-old by Forward, sire of the top-priced yearling in Thursday’s sale, realised top price of 2500 guineas at the annual sale of brood mares and racing stock at the Addington Show Grounds yesterday. In addition there were two dispersal sales.

Cheeky, a gelding from Squire’s Lady, was one of 11 lots offered to dissolve the partnership of the Tinwald trainer, D. L. McGregor, and W. R. R. Cruickshank, of Invercargill. He was bought by J. D, Guy, of Dunedin, acting as agent.

Cheeky qualified impressively at Ashburton on January 24 and attracted considerable interest when he entered the ring. The only other lot to realise a four-figure price was the six-year-old race mare, Ulove, by U. Scott from Sailor’s Love. Offered on behalf of R. C. Hills, of Christchurch, she was bought by the Sydney studmaster, R. Croghan. She joined D. G. Nyhan’s Templeton team after the sale and will race in New Zealand before joining Croghan’s stud. Croghan has bought freely at the sales in the past and he has built up a particularly strong stud of choice New Zealand mares. He now has more than 20 New Zealand mares, any of which would be envied by breeders throughout the

world. Altogether 44 lots were sold for 15,195 guineas, an average price of 345 guineas. There was little Australian interest throughout the day and all but choice lots attracted little competition.
