SPECIAL “SHOUT”

Maoris At Hampden

(N.Z. Press Association)

OAMARU, March 10. There was a special "shout” for Maoris from 4.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Oamaru Licensing Trust’s new hotel at Hampden today. The new tavern will not be officially opened, however, until Saturday afternoon.

The reason for the special shout was that Maoris, halfcast or more, will be barred from the hotel on Saturday afternoon because of the Southern Maori by-election. The law forbids Maoris to be served with liquor on Saturday afternoon. The Oamaru Licensing Trust decided to hold the premature “shout” for the Maoris because the new tavern has a background motif of Moeraki with its boulders, etc., an area which is inhabited mainly by Maoris.
