Overseas Shares Give Momentum To Market
The list of New Zealand shares was in balance and turn-overs were lighter on the stock market yesterday, but a strong Australian section added momentum, and over all there were 18 rises to 15 falls.
Key stocks were about in balance, and the range of issues was average. Autocrat Radio followed yesterday’s rise by Bell with a 3d gain to 9s 9d. New Zealand Refining rose another 3d
to 44s 3d, and New Zealand Refrigerating, at Ils 3d, and Rothman, at 23s 9d, also rose 3d. Other 3d rises were by Cable, Price, Downer, to 15s 9d, Turnbull and Jones, to 6s 3d, Wilson Malt, to 13s 9d, and Winstone new shares, to 32s 9d. Tasman rose another 6d to 48s 3d, and J. Wattie Canneries gained 2d to 16s Bd. Gear Meat firmed 3d to Ils 6d, but Canterbury lost 3d to 13s 9d. In the overseas section Bank of N.S.W. went up 6d to 44s 6d, G. J. Coles firmed Id
to 10s 2d and Myer, at 25s 6d, and Waltons, at 7s 6d, each gained 2d, but Woolworths lost Id to Ils. The falls were small. Most prominent was Consolidated Brick, 9d down to 13s. Fletcher, at 16s, McKenzies, at 7s, and New Zealand Newspapers, at 28s 6d, lost 3d each. Breweries declined: New Zealand fell Id to 12s 3d, Taranaki was 3d lower at 9s, and Tui notes lost 3d to ss.
New Zealand Insurance, at 235, and Wright Stephenson, at 13s 2d, lost Id each.
