FEBRUARY WEATHER
Hot, Sunny Month The highest February temperature since 1954 was recorded this year, and there was the most sunshine for the month since 1947, says the monthly meteorological report from Lincoln College. The high sunshine and evaporation, with low rainfall, provided almost continuous harvesting conditions. The highest temperature was on February 26, when 93.9 degrees was recorded, while the lowest of 37.9 degrees was recorded on February 17. There was one frost compared with none in 1965 and 1966. This was also recorded on February 17 when the grass temperature was 28 degrees. The rainfall for the month was 1.14 in, compared with 1.98 in in last year and I.oBin in 1965. The 226.9 hours of sunshine compared with the average of 189.5 hours, and the rate of evaporation was, the highest since 1949. Yields and samples of most crops had been good, but pastures and lucerne made little or no growth unless irrigated. Stock health was generally satisfactory, with a few reported cases of grass staggers and internal parasites in ewes early in February. Excellent crops of stone fruits and early pip fruits were harvested.
