FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A warm and moist northerly airstream prevails over most of New Zealand. A depression in the Tasman Sea is expected to pass south-eastwards over the south of the South Island later today. Forecast:

Canterbury and Kaikoura coast. —Moderate northerlies strong in exposed places about Cook Strait; persistent and heavy rain in the Alps and foot hills; elsewhere partly cloudy and very warm with scattered light rain at times. Central Marlborough, the Sounds and Nelson. —Fresh to strong northerly winds; cloudy, warm and humid with periods of rain; the rain is expected to become more persistent and heavier in western areas tomorrow.

Buller and Westland.—Fresh to strong northerlies moderate this afternoon. Dull, mild and humid with persistent rain heavy this morning. Outlook.—Scattered showers but increasing fair periods.
