VIETNAM TROOPS
Defence By P.M. (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 9. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said today the Government’s decision to send more combat troops and medical aid to Vietnam was “absolutely consistent” with previous Government announcements.
He added that the decision was “absolutely democratic” as the General Election had been fought on the Vietnam issue and Government policy had been endorsed by the electorate.
Mr Holyoake was commenting on allegations by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk).
The Prime Minister—commenting that the facts were quite clear—said South Vietnam had asked New Zealand to send combat troops. “At the time of its request our forces were heavily committed in Malaysia and our response has been limited to an artillery battery. “Now, with confrontation against Malaysia over,” he said, “the Government was bound by its obligations under S.E.A.T.O. to increase its commitment to Vietnam.”
