Home Use Of Solvents
Before any advice was given to housewives on the use of solvents such as white spirits or carbon tetrachloride for cleaning agents, any organisation giving the advice should first consult a responsible scientific body, such as the D.5.1.R., said Mr T. H. Boyle, a member of the Christchurch Metropolitan Eire Board, yesterday. Mr Boyle said that white spirits was highly inflammable and that carbon tetrachloride, while not inflammable, was very, very dangerous and toxic. Carbon tetrachloride had great affinity for fat in the body and attacked the kidneys and the liver. It had a delayed action, which was not noticed till about 10 days after the inhalation of the fumes.
