Romneys Not Popular At Stud Fair
Although Romnty flock rams were in. over-supply at the annual ram and stud ewe fair (wool breeds) conducted by the Ashburton Agricultural and Fastoral Association and at the show grounds yesterday, top quality entries fetched high prices.
The highest price paid was 125gns for a one-shear Romney ram, put forward by J. D. and W. T. Robertson, of Kelso, Southland. The Robertsons are considered to be one of the top breeders in the South Island and their rams met with a ready demand. Among the other successful vendors were Messrs R. W. Oakley, of Ashburton, and F. W. Allan, of Ruapuna. Mr Oakley averaged 37gns for each entry, with only one pen passed. Mr Allan also enjoyed considerable success and several of his Romney flock was sold for more than 40gns. The second highest price for the sale was made by Strathaven Farm. Carew. Ashburton, The one-shear ram concerned, sold for 63gns. The bulk of the Romney sale was taken up with medium to inferior quality flock rams and passings were frequent. Some oens did not even attract a bid. A large gallery of buyers fol lowed the auctioning of Corriedales. Bidding was brisk and most of the rams tn the offering brought prices of more than 20gns.
