FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—An almost stationary frontal zone lies over the south of the South Island and a moist northerly airstream prevails over the remainder of the country. Forecast:

Canterbury.—Moderate variable winds; rather persistent and heavy rain in the Alps and foothills; cloudy elsewhere with a little light rain at times; becoming cooler.
