FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—An almost stationary frontal zone lies over the south of the South Island and a moist northerly airstream prevails over the remainder of the country. Forecast:
Canterbury.—Moderate variable winds; rather persistent and heavy rain in the Alps and foothills; cloudy elsewhere with a little light rain at times; becoming cooler. Kaikoura coast —Northerly winds strong about Cook Strait but light or moderate elsewhere; variable skies with a few brief showers at times; very warm. Central Marlborough, the Sounds, Nelson.— Strong north-westerlies about the Sounds; elsewhere moderate to fresh northerlies; cloudy, warm and humid with showery periods.
Buller, Westland.—Northerlies strong in the north, but moderate or fresh elsewhere; overcast, mild and humid with occasional light rain becoming persistent and heavy during the day. Outlook.—All districts: unsettled with widespread rain. CHRISTCHURCH READINGS
