OBITUARY

MR C. T. A. WARD

Mr Charles Thomas Alexander Ward, a retired MidCanterbury fanner and a fanner chairman of United Wheatgrowers, Ltd., died in Christchurch yesterday after a short illness. He was 69.

Mr Ward, who for many years had been prominent in wheatgrowing affairs, was still a member of the board of United Wheatgrowers at the time of his death. He had retired from active farming at Chertsey in- 1956 but continued in a fanning partnership with his two sons in a 2000-acre property at Newlands near Ashburton. 1

Mr Ward was born at Ashburton, and educated at the Chertsey School. He began his career as a cadet with the Railways Department, and later established a carrying business at Ashburton. He began farming at Chertsey in the early 1930 s and acquired his extensive Newlands property in 1939. He was an active member of Mid-Canterbury Federated Fanners, and during the Second World War was on the Primary Production Council.

Mr Ward is survived by his sons. Messrs G. W. and T. J. Ward, and two daughters.
