CHILDREN’S COURT Boy Sentenced To Periodic Detention

A 15-year-old boy was sentenced to six months’ periodic detention when he appeared before Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M., in the Children’s Court last month on charges of theft and obscene language. Two boys, aged 16, appearing on charges of theft and false pretences, were placed on probation for two years, as was another boy, of the same age, charged with breaking and entering. In addition he was ordered to make restitution of £25.

Charged with unlawfully taking motor-vehicles, a boy aged 16 was placed on probation for two years, disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to make restitution of £5l. A boy aged 16, appearing on charges of being idle and disorderly, theft, and receiving, was placed on probation for two years, ordered to make restitution of 2s 6d and pay £2O towards the costs of prosecution. Also placed on probation for two years were two 16-year-old boys who appeared on charges of receiving and obstruction. Assault Charges

On charges of assault and wilful damage, a boy aged 16 was placed on probation for 18 months and fined £5. Two boys aged 15 and 16, charged with assault, were placed on probation for one year, and each was ordered to make restitution of £l4 Is 6d. Charged with unlawful sexual intercourse, a boy aged 16 was placed on probation for one year, as was another of the same age who drove while disqualified. His period of disqualification was extended by one year.

Appearing on a complaint that he was an indigent child, a boy aged 14 was committed to the care of the Superintendent of Child Welfare, as was. a boy aged 13, who was found to be not under proper control. Two 11-year-old boys, one charged with wilful damage, and the other with theft and unlawful taking, were placed under supervision for two years. Also placed under supervision for two years was a girl aged 11, who appeared on a complaint that she was not under proper control, a boy aged 13, charged with theft, and a boy aged 14, charged with burglary. In the last case a fine of £lO was also Imposed, and restitution of £3 Ils 6d was ordered. On charges of receiving and burglary, a boy aged 14 was placed under supervision for 18 months and ordered to make restitution of £2 Is 6d. Also placed under supervision for 18 months was a boy aged 15, who was charged with obstructing a railway crossing. He was ordered to make restitution of £l5l 3s Id. On a charge of drinking intoxicating liquor he was fined £2.

On a complaint that she was a delinquent child, a 15-year-old girl was placed under supervision for one year, as was a 13-year-old boy who was found to be not under proper control. , Theft Charges Seven boys and one girl, whose ages ranged from 12 to 14, were charged with theft Each was placed under supervision for one year, and a 15-year-old boy similarly charged was fined £7 10s, in addition to being placed under supervision. Others placed under supervision for one year were a boy aged 15, charged with attempted theft a boy aged 15, charged with assault (a fine of £2O was also imposed), a boy aged 13, charged with giving false alarm of fire (restitution £5 ss), and a year-old girl who appeared on a complaint that she was living in an environment detrimental to her physical well-being. A boy aged 14, charged with indecent assault had his present period of supervision extended by six months. A girl aged 16, charged with assault and arson, was admonished and returned to the care of the Superintendent of Child Welfare. Similarly dealt with was a 14-year-old boy charged with assault and unlawfully taking a cycle. Four boys and a girl, aged 13 to 16, charged with theft were admonished and discharged, as were two boys, aged 11, who gave false alarms of fire. Similarly dealt with were a boy aged 15, found to be in a building without lawful excuse, a boy aged 14, charged with obscene exposure, a girl aged 15, found on licensed premises, a boy aged 13, charged with receiving, and another boy of the same age charged with

the possession and discharging of a firearm. Fines Imposed

Fines were imposed in the following cases: A boy aged 15, drinking intoxicating liquor in a public place, £1 10s; a boy aged 16, charged with obscene language, £7 10s; a boy aged 16, possession of liquor, £5; a boy aged 16, charged with wilful damage, £7 10s (restitution £6); a boy aged 16, obscene language, £3; a boy aged 15, theft £5; a boy aged 13, theft, f2; a boy aged 17, drinking intoxicating liquor in a public place, £1 10s; a boy aged 16, purchasing liquor, £2 10s; a boy aged 16, drinking in a public place, £2; a boy aged 16, obscene language, £27 10s; a boy aged 16, driving while disqualified, £2O (disqualification extended one year); a boy aged 17, driving while disqualified, £5 (disqualification extended 18 months); a boy aged 15, theft as a servant, £2; a boy aged 16, possessing an offensive weapon, £3; a girl aged 16, wilful obstruction of a constable, £5; a boy aged 15, possession of a shotgun, £1; a boy aged 15, purchasing intoxicating liquor, £3; a boy aged 16, drinking liquor in a public place, £3 10s; a boy aged 16, drinking liquor in a

public place, £2; a boy aged v 16, obscene language, escaping -from lawful custody, and assaulting the police, £10; a boy aged 16, driving dangerously, £6 and disqualification extended 12 months; a boy aged 16, possession of an offensive weapon, £l.
