POWELL RALLY

Some Give Support

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) NEW YORK, March 6. Adam Clayton Powell’s Harlem constituents held an enthusiastic rally in his support yesterday but the turn-out was small.

About 4000 backers of the Negro politician, denied his seat in Congress, jammed into the Abyssinian Baptist Church of which he is pastor. Thousands more had been expected to gather on the street outside, but only a few hundred braved a chilling rain to hear the speeches by loudspeaker. Powell remained at his holiday home on Bimini Island in the Bahamas. He faces arrest in connexion with a defamation suit if he sets foot in New York State.

Representatives of about 70 Negro groups cheered as the Rev. David Licorish opened the rally with a stinging indictment of Congress.
