DEGREES CONFERRED OUT OF TIME
The timing of the University of Canterbury graduation ceremony was questioned at a meeting of the University Council. X The Rev. W. M. Hendrie asked why (when the council had urged that all possible degrees be conferred at the proper ceremony in May) a list was presented at almost every council meeting.
The Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips) said that such applications were made by graduands going overseas or others who needed their degrees conferred for professional reasons.
The Pro-Chancellor (Mr T. H. McCombs) said the May ceremony was a relic of the time when papers had to be sent by sea to England and returned after assessment. “Results are available now,” said Mr McCombs, “and, if the council wished, it would be possible to advance the date of the graduation ceremony.” The Chancellor (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) said members might like to think about this.
