Rescue Bid In Fire Fails To Save Life
A 69-year-old man rushed into a bach on fire yesterday morning to rescue a neighbour’s son from his blazing bed.
However, the rescued man did not respond to artificial resuscitation. He was Patrick Bernard Spillane, aged 40, of 8 Bray street, Linwood. Mr J. Collins, a retired marine engineer, said Mr Spillane's mother woke him and his wife about 2.30 a.m. yesterday. She was calling from a fence close to the window that the bach on the rear of the Spillane's property was on fire and that Mr Spillane was inside. He looked into the bach. “1 couldn't see anything but Mrs Spillane kept saying ‘Pat’s inside, Pa’’s inside.’ I had another look and could just make out the features of his face through the flames. “I rushed through the flames and lifted him out We tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but it was unsuccessful “When the brigade and am-
bulance arrived they also tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and a resuscitator but it was unsuccessful,” he said. Mr Collins said his own feet were very slightly burned.
