Ring Events Draw Crowd At Kaikoura Show

With competitors from Christchurch to Blenheim, light horse and pony events were the main attraction at the Kaikoura Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s fifty-fifth annual show at South Bay Domain, Kaikoura, on Saturday.

In contrast with last year, the weather and ground were ideal. A large crowd attended and gate-takings, at £9B 16s, were £3B up on last year. Speaking after the grand parade, the association’s president (Mr V. J. Corbett) said the light horse and pony sections were as good as show officials had ever seen, for entries were very large. The member of Parliament for Marlborough (Mr T. P. Shand) congratulated the horse exhibitors on their showing, and said he thought they could win any competition. Mr Shand said he had two “minor criticisms” to make. “I wish we had a stronger show of sheep, but of course there is not a strong stud breeding industry here,” he said. “I think the dairy fanners, too, could well lend more support and bring some benefit on themselves in doing so. But with these two minor criticisms I would say it was as good a show as I have seen here.” The feature of the light horse section was the success of Hunting Stewart, exhibited by Miss Jean Robertson, of Templeton. A five-year-old grey gelding, this hack had only been to four shows previously, at which he had taken minor placings in both maiden and open events. On Saturday, however, he won all four classes he contested before the championship. These were the maiden hack, the 11-stone hack, the best women’s hack, and the best-mannered and paced hack. Pony Classes In the pony section, the supreme championship was won by Miss Anita Macphail’s Glitter. This chestnut with white points is no stranger to both country and metropolitan showrings, and on Saturday had little difficulty in winning a string of first placings. For the parade, the pony had more ribbons than could be spaced neatly round his neck, so Miss Macphail wore two first prize ribbons as cross sashes over her tunic. Run-ner-up in the supreme pony championship was the Blenheim competitor, Miss Wendy Wadworth, with Williedo. This pony had earlier won the championship in the section for ponies from 13 to 14.2 hands. The sheep section was much the same as last year, with Romneys and Southdowns drawing some of the best support. The Romney judge (Mr G. T. Thompson, of Blenheim) said that competition was improving, although entries were not large. Both the ewe and ram championships fell to the district breeder, L. H. H. Weavers. Mr T. J. Taylor, of Ward, who judged the Corriedales, was quite pleased with the entries placed before him. He said there were some good sheep in the stud section, and some excellent entries among the flock sheep. Main awards in the Southdown section were won by J. K. Fincham, a regular exhibitor from Hawarden. Awards were:— CHAMPIONSHIPS Horaaa Pony, 13 to 14.2 hands: Wendy Wadworth’s Williedo. Pony, 12 to 13 hands: Anita Macphail’s Glitter.
