Control Of Noise Urged
Agitation for a national movement for noise abatement should be started in Christchurch, according to Mr A. C. Brassington, a solicitor who claims that the value of properties are deteriorating everywhere because of the noise nuisance.
He told the annual meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Hard of Hearing League that he would like it to tackle the problem by promoting a small study group, consisting of doctors and other experts, and by agitating for national noise standards and codes embodied in an Act of Parliament Young Affected Mr Brassington said that
he had noticed that it was not the old but the young who were becoming hard of hearing, and that it was caused by the hqises of industry and modem society. ‘ Even the gardener goes to work with a box around his neck,” he said, adding that
he believed the transistor a “terrible thing.” He said he also hated the noise of television sets, and ordinary radios. Other noise-makers he decried included motor scooters.
“Ears are being destroyed in factories and people have their sleep disturbed through noise,” he claimed. He suggested that the league ask the local member of Parliament, Mr H. J. Walker, to investigate research on noise abatement during his forthcoming visit to the United States.
