DOCKING COWS DEEMED CRUEL
(New Zealand Press Association)
BLENHEIM, February 26.
The Royal Federation of New Zealand Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is to ask Federated Farmers either to set up, in consultation with the federation, a committee to review the question of the docking of cows’ tails on a national basis, or to set up further regional committees to operate locally.
This was decided at a meeting of the federation’s executive council held in Blenheim, when it adopted a suggestion along those lines made to it by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys). The findings of the committees would be referred to both the federation and Minister for study. Strong Opposition
The federation confirmed its previous verbal submissions to the Minister made by
its deputation on October 26, that the federation strongly opposes the practice of docking cows’ tails and considers the same to be mutilation under the act, and that, pending clarification of the question, the practice be suspended by the Minister.
