Spreydon Swimmers Win Yaldhurst Shield
With only a point or two separating the chief contestants throughout the afternoon, the annual Yaldhurst Shield carnival at the North Beach centennial pool on Saturday provided Interesting and often exciting competition. Spreydon retained the trophy by beating Wharenui A by three points. Jellie Park was third. The result was still in doubt at the start of the last race, the girts' six-a side freestyle relay. Wharenui A, trailing Spreydon by five points in the aggregate, quickly established itself as the leading team. Spreydon required a third placing to win the shield, but for four lengths it languished In fourth place. Its fortunes changed, however, in the penultimate lap and the team finished strongly to gain second. The under-14 girls’ 100 yards freestyle Anal drew the best field of the afternoon, alt five competitors being Canterbury representatives. After an excellent effort of Imin 2.lsec in her heat, Catherine Whiting (Wharenui) won the final in Imin 3.3 sec from Maureen Darch (Spreydon) and Shona Hallam (Sockburn Park), Later Mdiss Whiting swam the anchor leg for the Wharenui A girls’ relay team, which did well to break 2min for the sixlength race.
