New Works Will Operate Soon
'THE new fertiliser works of i the Dominion Fertiliser 1 Company, Ltd., at Seadown, i just north of Timaru, is expected to start manufacturing ; on April 1. The works’ man- i ager, Mr V. R. Smith, said this i
week that manufacturing might actually start a week or so before this. The first shipment of phosphate rock coming through the port of Timaru Is expected on March 7. Mr Smith
said that the Timaru Harbour Board had loaders to unload the rock and at the works facilities were ready to handle it. The first load of acid is also expected from Christchurch
about the middle of March. Mr Smith said that initially it would be coming from the Hornby works of Kempthorne Prosser’s. Six 25-ton rail tankers would be used to transport the acid and it was expected that these would give a capacity of about 300 to 400 tons of acid a week.
Mr Smith said that production a year was expected to be about 60,000 to 80,000 tons but it could be lower or higher.
The new despatch plant at the works will be capable of handling in excess of 100 tons an hour, Mr Smith said. It will be a combined bulk and bag machine. All small orders and special mixtures will, however, still be handled through the existing store.
