Seven Dollars Seventy

Dalgety and New Zealand Loan’s stock auctioneer, Mr R. A. Park, will obviously not find the transition from pounds, shillings and pence to decimal currency very difficult. At the Hawarden ewe fair this week he quite frequently introduced decimal currency into his auctioneering a practice that could well be employed more widely by auctioneers in general as they acquaint themselves and farmers generally with the system. Some farmers in the gallery could be heard commenting that they would have to get used to the change. “Seventy-seven shillings, 775, seven and 70, £3 17s, seven dollars 70,” called Mr Park on one of a number of occasions when he rang the changes.
